GREAT Preproposal FAQs
1. |
Q. Will the awards flow through the campus sponsored research offices or be
made through direct campus fund transfers through the accounting offices?
A. Funding will be made through an Interlocation Transfer of Funds directly
from UC BREP to the PI's account.

2. |
Q. Can a pre proposal include an undergraduate who is applying to graduate
school for the fall following the July start of the award?
A. No. The trainee must be an enrolled
graduate student at the time of the award commencement, July 1st.

|
|
 |
3. |
Q. The trainee we wish to nominate will be entering their fourth year of study at the time of the award. Will this reduce our chances of being invited to submit a full proposal?
A. Not necessarily. The reviewers are interested in selecting pre-proposals with trainees who will continue for the entire two years of GREAT funding. If the trainee is four or more years along in their Ph.D. program, justification must be provided, and it should be clearly articulated as to why GREAT should support a student who is so far along in their training.

Q. May a trainee use the trainee allowance funds for campus parking permits, athletic club membership or home computer?
A. The GREAT award is a training grant and not a fellowship per se and, as such, is awarded to the UC Sponsor not the graduate student. Discretionary funds are to be allocated at the discretion of the student and sponsor. These funds are intended to be used to aid the trainee in the performance of his or her research project. The funds are not intended for personal use unconnected to the student's research and training. Also, funds may not be used to provide infrastructure such as office furniture. However, it was envisioned that such items as a laptop computer, which might be interpreted as personal item, could have a direct impact on the student's ability to do their research and would fall within the remit of training related discretionary funds. Ultimately, although GREAT provides broad-based guidelines, it is up to the discretion of the Sponsor in consultation with the trainee, as to how to appropriately expend these funds in support of the training project. Ownership of inventorial and non-inventorial equipment is determined by the equipment policy a the local campus.

6. |
Q. I am a graduate student working with a UC researcher who is interested submitting a pre-proposal for the GREAT
Training Grant. The proposal includes working with a team of three faculty researchers on the project. Are all three sponsors since they will advise me throughout my project? Or if only two should be named as sponsors, can the third be named as a
mentor?
A. You may name two sponsors (the primary sponsor is our contact person) and up to two
mentors. Sponsors with less oversight than others may be designated as a mentor(s).

7. |
Q. Do all sponsors have to be faculty at a UC? Is it sufficient that Dr. XXXX
is an adjunct professor at the UC?
A. We ask that sponsors be outstanding member of the University of
California (UC) and/or the UC-administered national laboratories' scientific research community. Therefore, Dr. XXXX qualifies
since he holds an academic appointment as adjunct professor at the UC. He would use his UC appointment title and contact information on
the faculty sponsor's pre-proposal form since all sponsors must be named and must provide a signature. Primary sponsors must have PI status at their institution.

Q. Where is the signature page? My sponsors are at different campuses and it
will take awhile to get the necessary signatures.
A. Once you submit your pre-proposal, you will receive a message confirming the
submission and directions to print the signature page. For multi-campus submissions, you may send individual signature pages to your sponsors.
That is, the signatures do not have to be on one page.
